Frames - Good or bad?
As mentioned in the frames section of HTMlite, frames may be viewed as a great evolution on a site to a dismal display of misery.

You should decide on whether this type of layout is right for your site or not. Everyone has a different opinion on them, so it's really up to you. One main thought is... does your site REALLY require the use of frames? Is it large enough (have enough pages) to warrant the use of a stable navigation type area and a changing main area?

My main opinion is based on if the coding is done correctly. Sure, a site may be a good candidate for using frames, but what good are they if the person making the layout codes it wrong? Having the links open into the wrong areas or having other sites appear in the frames layout are the ultimate baddies when it comes to frames.

BAD LINKING. No matter what, if the links don't work correctly on a site, that reflects fully on the site itself and it's creator. Linking is probably the most needed to know area of frames.

Pages loading in the same frame. Ever go into a framed site and have the main page content appear in the navigation area by mistake? What to do? Some visitors may not come back to that site for a long time as they get frustrated not seeing the correct information being displayed in the correct area.

Other sites loading in a framed layout. Some of the major sites on the Internet have a frame breaking code on them. But for others... there may be a problem. Some novice frames creators will link to an outside site (not their own) and have it show up in their own frames layout. Why is this bad? Too many people taking the credit for anothers work (which could be a bad or good thing depending on the displayed page). A basic unwritten rule of the web is... only display your information within your site area unless you have strict permission from the other site to do so. It is part of "net-iquette;.

If you do happen to come across a badly linked frames site, please be kind and send a quick email to the designer. They may not be aware of the problem and can then fix it. We are all out there to learn and help each other :)

FRAMES vs SEARCH ENGINES. Another common concern is how a framed site will be viewed by the search engines. The CRE8PC site has researched this and here are the results ... http://www.cre8pc.com/howtoframes.html.
